The hikes began with our move to Pasadena. One walk down Millard canyon in El-Nino rains, past rows of fragrant invasive Scottish broom, reminiscent of childhood smells, and I was hooked. From that first hike to some in the Sierras, some in the Grand Canyon, and hundreds more in the Angeles National Forest, I went on to hiking higher mountains, the Karakorums, and the Himalayas of Pakistan. It's what led to philanthropy, something I knew nothing about till I experienced the whole-hearted hospitality of mountain folks. What it meant to give back to others, more or less privileged than yourself, became the obvious thing to do.
